True Gold Prizm or another gold? Gold Wave, Shimmer, Vinyl and Black Gold explained
Written 2026-10-26
"Gold Prizm /10" used to mean one card. In the first Prizm sets there was a single gold parallel, numbered to 10. Newer sets add Gold Wave, Gold Shimmer, Gold Ice, Gold Sparkle, Gold Vinyl, Black Gold and more, and several of those are also numbered to 10. Collectors call the plain Gold /10 the True Gold, and it's the one most of them chase. Sports Illustrated's guide to which Prizm parallels will last names "true Gold Prizms /10" first.
The gold parallels in recent Prizm sets
From the 2023-24 basketball and 2024 football checklists:
| Parallel | Numbered to | Basketball 2023-24 | Football 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold (the True Gold) | /10 | Yes | Yes |
| Gold Wave | /10 | Yes | Yes |
| Gold Shimmer | /10 | Yes (called Gold Shimmer FOTL) | Yes |
| Choice Gold | /10 | No | Yes |
| Gold Sparkle | /24 | Yes | Yes |
| Gold Vinyl | /5 | No | Yes |
| Black Gold | /5 | Yes | No |
WNBA Prizm is different again: the 2024 set has Gold /10, Gold Ice /10, Black Gold /5 and a Gold Vinyl that's a one-of-one.
When each one started
From our checklists, base set:
- NBA: Gold /10 in every year from 2012-13. Black Gold /5 from 2018-19. A "Premium Gold Shimmer" /10 in 2019-20, then Gold Shimmer /10 from 2020-21. Gold Wave numbered to 10 from 2021-22 (our 2020-21 checklist lists a Gold Wave with no print run). Gold Sparkle /24 from 2022-23. Gold Ice /10 and Gold Lazer /10 in 2024-25, which makes five different gold /10s that year.
- NFL: Gold /10 in every year from 2012. Gold Vinyl /5 from 2015, when Beckett listed it as new. Gold Shimmer /10 from 2021. Gold Sparkle /24 from 2022. Gold Wave /10 from 2023. Choice Gold /10 from 2024. In 2016 to 2018 several inserts also had a Gold Mojo /10.
- WNBA: Gold /10 and Black Gold /5 from the first set in 2020. Gold Vinyl 1/1 from 2022. Gold Ice /10 from 2024. Gold Seismic /10 and Gold WNBA Logo /10 in 2025.
So a gold 2016-17 basketball base card numbered to 10 can only be a True Gold. A 2024-25 one could be any of five cards.
How to make sure a listing is the True Gold
- Read the stamp. A /24 is a Gold Sparkle, and a /5 is a Gold Vinyl or Black Gold. Neither is a True Gold, however the title reads.
- For a /10, look for a second word. Sellers usually name the pattern: "Gold Wave", "Gold Shimmer", "Gold Ice", "Choice Gold". A title that says only "Gold /10" from a set that has several gold /10s isn't proof. Compare the photo with a confirmed True Gold of the same year, and ask the seller if you're not sure.
- Check the year. If the set has no other gold /10 (see the dates above), the question doesn't arise.
- Look at the back. The serial is stamped on the back. If the listing doesn't show it, ask for a photo before you buy.
Where to see every True Gold
The True Gold section lists every True Gold /10 by set and by player, from 2012 on, with the copies for sale on eBay right now. Our listing search only shows a card as a True Gold when the title says Gold, names no other gold parallel and shows a /10 print run.
Monopoly Prizm is the one exception to the /10 rule: its gold is numbered to 49, and collectors treat it as that product's True Gold, so we list it with the others.
